MGMAT CAT's

by mjohnson » Sat Apr 17, 2010 8:55 am
I have a question about using MGMAT CAT's as an indicator of performance. I have taken 1 GMAT prep CAT and 2 MGMAT CAT's (because I wanted to save the other GMAT Prep) and am not sure how to interpret the results (shown below):

GMAT Prep - 620 (timed)
MGMAT CAT1 - 640 (but I went over on the quant. section time)
MGMAT CAT2 - 560 (timed)

The problems I have missed are all over the place with respect to problem type. I have a little over 2 weeks before the actual exam and am not sure the best way to move forward. When I work through the OG12 questions (under timed conditions) I feel pretty confident about the results (75-90% of problems right the first try). My original strategy was to complete three more practice tests (MGMAT and GMAT prep) and the remainder of the incomplete OG questions, but now I 1) discouraged from my latest MGMAT result; 2) not sure about strategy and how to improve and 3) worried about my upcoming test and how to move forward.

I am really only shooting to make ~600 because I am geographically constrained to a specific school. Any advice would be great!

The biggest thing to take away from your Manhattan CATs is that you are having difficulties with recognition. One thing that you should try going forward is classify each question before you attempt to solve it. Odds are you know how to do more questions than you are currently answering correctly, but you are failing to recognize what is being tested. I would spend the last two weeks doing this. Take one more CAT about 5-7 days before the test, mainly for timing purposes, and spend the majoirty of your time doing this.

Thanks for the feedback! I think your advice is very good and well taken. I followed up my MGMAT test with the second GMAT Prep test and scored a 680 QS 42/VS 40. I did run out of time towards the end of the quant section. I think I will focus mainly on completing all of the OG problems with serious review of the ones I missed the first time around (and rework).

In your opinion - what CAT would you recommend since I have already completed the two GMAT prep? I have read that you can uninstall/reinstall GMAT Prep and get tests with completely different questions. I would like to stick to "Official" type questions but don't know which CAT is best for that. Do not really like MGMAT - I found that the last one I took had a glitch and actually skipped 2 questions somehow...

It depends on what you're looking for. If you want to take a CAT that will give you a good indication of your score, I would say that outside of GMAT prep, all of them are flawed. Kaplan CATs are great for practice, but I am not sure how accurate their scoring algorithm is. From my experience I would avg your lowest MGMAT score with your highest, and that is about where you will score on the real thing.
