To learn maximum from this question and many more highly useful concepts for SC, go through the Thursday vidoes of Ron. The link is given above.

Even if you are good at SC, you are going to learn immensly from two or three videos of SC. They change my way I handle the SCs . Thanks Ron for all your explanations. My SC learning is almost all from your posts .

Sulfur dioxide, a major contributor to acid rain, is an especially serious pollutant because it diminishes the respiratory system's ability to deal with all other pollutants.

(A) an especially serious pollutant because it diminishes the respiratory system's ability to deal
(C) an especially serious pollutant because it diminishes the capability of the respiratory system in dealing

Is "respiratory system's ability" correct? Respiratory system is a system, i.e. it does not refer to humans or animals.

Is the rule bulletproof, or has some exceptions?

anybody have the source of this problem?
the only place i've actually seen it with my own eyes is "1000sc", which contains some official problems among a vast sea of inferior third-party problems.

if the problem is actually official (i.e., if someone has actually SEEN it in gmatprep), then we have our answer right there. if the problem is not official, then it provides us with no evidence regarding the issue.
Ron has been teaching various standardized tests for 20 years.

yeah, i remember that -- but i didn't get the problem firsthand; that time, i got it from a secondhand document. (i had to prepare that session in a hurry... heh)
now that the study hall is more established, i'm doing more thorough quality control on the problems.
