Its when you look at the anser choices and three of them look one way and the other two are another way for example. If you have A and B using "which" as the first contruct of the underlined portion and C,D and E use "that". So you have 3 choices using that and 2 using which, so if you know you need that in the particular example you can immediately eliminate A nd B.
