MBA Chances of admission

by kriti87 » Thu Apr 19, 2012 7:00 pm
Hi,

I currently have 2 years of full-time work experience in IT consulting and now I wish to quit and pursue my interest in the non-profit sector by assisting in their marketing, promotions, fundraising, and creative content writing activities. Along with this, side by side I hope to work on my MBA/MIS applications for Fall 2013. In case I decide to continue working in this sector for another year, will the 2 years of IT experience + non-profit experience help me in my MBA admissions?

The non-profit sector may not be my ultimate career goal, but it is something that I would definitely like to be a part of if even for a short duration of time. If this I can bring out in my applications, would it go against me? Or will it add to my existing profile?

Please advise.

Thanks.

Non-profit can be a great industry to come from as you apply to Bschool. If you intend on going in with non-profit goals, and know already now that this is what you want to do, then you should totally go for it. It will make things easier also in terms of explaining your story to the adcom as to why etc. (plus, if it's what you really want to do, will only make your life better :) )

Thanks Jon!

But I'm planning to quit my current firm after 2 yrs of work experience. I do get leadership opportunities but not enough. Also since I am interested in focusing on areas such as marketing, communications and strategy , I want to gain some experience doing those. In the non-profit sector I hope to get the opportunity to understand marketing, what fund raising is etc. So if I pursue this for a few months before application season begins again, will it be difficult to explain to the adcom?

So I would have 2 years + some non -profit exp. considering that I have done volunteer work in the past, pursuing this for a few months should not reflect negatively on me.

The main reason I'm quitting is coz the work is not challenging enough and it is something that I do not want to do the rest of my life. Non-profit will help me gain some new exposure and learn something new.

Please advise.

Thanks.

It should not reflect negatively at all. But of course, as you know it will depend on WHICH post you are offered. OBviously, if it's a post which has attached to it leadership opportunities and responsibilities, it can only be better. Just make sure you don't get stuck with NO job when you apply right dude? That can be a tougher obstacle to overcome... so you know, I would say only go for it, once you have a secured post.

When you say I shouldn't be without a job, does it mean full -time. Since by the time I leave it will be July and i would be applying in September for Fall 2013. So in any case i would have only 3 months to really do something. During that time if I take up a part-time activity or work on some volunteering opportunity, that would still count right?
