I have been a follower of BTG, but this is my first post. Today was a disappointment, but I hope that others can learn from my mistakes.
First, I am happy with my quant score of 47. I must have made a couple of mistakes, but that's fine. Honestly, the math was ridiculously easy. I know the few I got wrong, but I chose not to waste the time to work on them. With more time I could have motored through them though (and should have since I had time left).
The verbal was a train wreck. First, I expected low 40's for a raw score, not 35. I never scored below 40 on any of the practice CAT's (both GMATPrep's and all 6 MGMAT). Where did I go wrong? I focused way too much on SC and not enough on RC. RC was easy for me, but I didn't realize that it takes practice to move through tough passages quickly. Under pressure the task is a bit more challenging. I was sailing along through the first 6 questions nailing everything. Then came a nasty RC unlike anything I had even seen. I would consider myself a sophisticated reader, but this was out of my league. I read it several times and couldn't understand what it was about. The questions were equally ridiculous.
So, what happened? You are likely thinking it shouldn't matter and I just moved on and made up for it. No, I broke the major rule of spending too much time on any one question. By the time I was on question 10 of 41, I had about 40 minutes left. I totally lost track of time and forgot what I was doing. From that point forward I was flustered and rushed everything. I guessed on anything that was challenging and on others I was taking the first answer that looked right.
Today was a 720 day that I threw away over one RC passage. I knew better, but did it anyway. Don't underestimate the importance of getting used to the timing. I thought I had it figured out.
