seat denial

by max37274 » Thu Feb 18, 2010 7:15 am
Arnold: I was recently denied a seat on an airline flight for which I had a confirmed reservation, because the airline had overbooked the flight. Since I was forced to fly on the next available flight, which did not depart until two hours later, I missed an important business meeting. Even though the flight on which I had a reservation was canceled at the last minute due to bad weather, the airline should still pay me compensation for denying me a seat on the flight.

Jamie: The airline is not morally obligated to pay you any compensation. Even if you had not been denied a seat on the earlier flight, you would have missed your business meeting anyway.

A principle that, if established, justifies Jamie's response to Arnold is that an airline is morally obligated to compensate a passenger who has been denied a seat on a flight for which the passenger has confirmed reservations
(A) if the only reason the passenger is forced to take a later flight is that the airline overbooked the original flight
(B) only if there is a reason the passenger is forced to take a later flight other than the original flight's being canceled due to bad weather
(C) only if the passenger would not have been forced to take a later flight had the airline not overbooked the original flight
(D) even if the only reason the passenger is forced to take a later flight were that the original flight is canceled due to bad weather
(E) even if the passenger would still have been forced to take a later flight had the airline not overbooked the original flight

Is the question correctly posted ??

Argument : Jamie: The airline is not morally obligated to pay you any compensation

Question stem : A principle that, if established, justifies Jamieâ response to Arnold is that an airline is morally obligated to compensate..

Argument and Question stem conflict each other..pls check the Q.

I would choose C

A- Jaime is arguing that even if the flight wasn't overbooked, the guy would have missed his meeting because of the weather

B- This isn't consistant with the stimulus, because if the passanger is forced to take another flight for a reason that is arbitrary then Arnold's point would stand

C- Correct

D- I think the "even if" makes both D and E wrong

E- same as D

Thanks Max,
That being the case, im putting equal weight on A and C.

osirus,
I don't know how you linked meeting concept with option A. Could you pls explain little bit..?

Infact, I see that basically A and C mean the same thing with a subtle difference of "ONLY" positioned in A and C.
In general, we don't prefer answers with STRONG wordings. I feel that A is more strict in reasoning.

So, I will put my bet on C.

Any expert pls comment.

Jaime says that even if Arnold had not been denied a seat on the earlier plane because of overbooking he would have missed his meeting anyway (because of the weather). Option A is inconsistent with what she said. Option A narrows the scope too much. Jaime doesn't argue that the only reason that the airline is obligated to compensate the passanger is if the flight is overbooked. She in fact insinuates that because of the weather he would have missed his meeting anyway. This means that there are other circumstances that would cause delays or inconveniences and the airline isn't obligated to compensate passengers in these situations.

Arnold says : compensate me because :
Reason 1: i had confirmed reservation
Reason 2: u overbooked the original flight
Reason 3: u (airline) forced me to take next flight

After hearing arnold's 3 reasons... Jamie says the airline is not obliged to compensate him. this implies that jamie does not consider the above 3 reasons + bad weather grounds for compensation. So we have to find an answer choice that gives a reason other than these reasons for compensation.

A. Incorrect - This is arnold's Reason 2 ..... Jamie does not believe in this reason as grounds for compensation. Eliminated.

B. Incorrect - According to stimulus above, Jamie does not think flight cancellation due to bad weather is a reason for compensation.

C. Correct : 'only if the passenger would not have been forced to take a later flight - This gives Jamie a reason other than the 3 reasons mentioned above.

D. Incorrect : Same as B

E. Incorrect : This is arnold's reason 3 which Jamie does not consider adequate for compensation. Eliminated.
