These are generally good for data gathering and getting questions answered, but if your desire is to try and meet decision makers who can impact the admissions decision it's generally not helpful. One added benefit is meeting others in same boat who are usually eager to swap stories.

I just got an email back from them. He said that the goal is not to replace the face-to-face contact with the schools, but to make real meetings more efficient. Some of the topics in the conference program look pretty good too, so I registered...it's free anyways so why not.
