Although genetic recombination ensures that only half the genetic material of a parent is represented in the offspring, some genetic lines may eventually die out entirely, even though there are numerous progeny.
"¢ Although
"¢ Conclusively
"¢ When
"¢ Because
"¢ If

OA is D. Whats wrong with A, although correctly brings out the contrast. Please help

This sentence is not showing any contrast. There are two ideas discussed in this sentence:

1)genetic recombination ensures that only half the genetic material of a parent is represented in the offspring

2)some genetic lines may eventually die out entirely, even though there are numerous progeny

There is no contrast between these two statements. 2) is continuing the idea from the 1) sentence. To make sure that only half of the genetic material is represented, some genetic lines die out entirely.

If the second statement said that less than half or more than half of the genetic material is represented, then "Although" would have been correct.

So "Because" is the correct usage here..

hi - I agree with you.. on the first look it looks like that we need 'Although' here because of the contrast. But, if you read again, it is not the first part but the second part which is bringing the contrast. 'even though there are numerous progeny' --

This sentence is indeed confusing.

even though is not bringing any contrast. In fact it is supporting the first statement. First statement says that only half is represented. "Even though" supports this by saying, some are destroyed even if they are many in number to keep the count to half.

I support the comment by Mehersa. We must always underline the 'portion of discussion"

Also, I fell for A. However, if I take into consideration about the fact of Aspirant 2011, I am bit surprised.

Aspirant2011,
I have not read this rule. Could you please let me know if this is supported by any rule? It would be good to know that.

After knowing the answer, one thing which I personally feel that, this sentence has issue in the meaning. That is why Because makes sense.

Can we have comments by any expert to guide us through.
