Good SC!

by gmat_perfect » Thu Aug 26, 2010 1:16 pm
I have been pmed a sentence to explain. here is the sc.

In 1791 Robert Carter III, one of the wealthiest plantation owners in Virginia, stunned his family, friends, and neighbors by filing a deed of emancipa¬tion, setting free the more than 500 slaves who were legally considered his property.

(A) setting free the more than 500 slaves who were legally considered
(B) setting free more than the 500 slaves legally considered as
(C) and set free more than 500 slaves, who were legally considered as
(D) and set free more than the 500 slaves who were legally considered
(E) and he set free the more than 500 slaves who were legally considered as

See the following sentences:
1. I have bought x, y, and z and have helped the poor with those things. ----Correct.
2. I have bought x, y, and z, and have helped the poor.---Incorrect
= Here, the subject is I, and it has two verbs: bought and helped. These two verbs should not be separated by comma before and.
3. I have bought x, y, and z, and I have helped the poor.---Incorrect.
= Here, there are two errors: 1) 'Comma + and' has been sued to separate tow verbs of the same subject; 2) The subject has been unnecessarily repeated.
4. Considered X Y-is the correct idiom. NOT "Consider X as Y"

So A is correct.

Guys, if you think that there is another plausible explanation on this one, please explain.

thanks.

"setting free the more than 500 slaves who were legally considered his property" must modifies emancipation

Options C,D & E not valid.

"Considered as" is not correct.

"more than the 500 slaves" is different from "more than 500 slaves"

Option B is not valid.

Pick A

Close contenders are A n D...rest can b eliminated for not using correct idiom..
I think you missed on another imp change of meaning between A n D...
Changing d position of the changes d meaning..
D alters d meaning..so, go with original...

Whatever you explained with the comma theory, is not fully correct.
GMAT does not play with the punctuation problems.
Some days back only I posted a question where the comma theory was not working.

ok, between A and D

D has two basic problems.

1. more than the 500 slaves -> is different from the more than 500 slaves : as already stated

the more than 500 slaves -> means may be 600 slaves, 700 slaves or anything > 500 slaves [ Correct ]
more than the 500 slaves -> means 500 slaves + something more(X), X can be slaves, animals, birds anything.... [ Incorrect ]

2. setting free the more than 500 slaves who were legally considered his property" this is connected/result to the clause : Robert stunned his family,

You can't connect it by a 'and' statement.

IMO A

Anand, I think the Modifier phrase modifies "deed of emanicipation"
