Admission in Masters in Finance

by divine » Fri May 31, 2013 11:47 am
Hi

I am a Chartered Accountant(India) with approx 5 years of experience in auditing, taxation and now as a treasury specialist. I wish to pursue Masters in Finance course from either London Business School or INSEAD Singapore (which has recently launched this course). I have a 650 GMAT score. Can someone please advise if considering my profile this is a decent score to apply with or should I first aim for a higher score.

Also, which should be given the 1st preference, LBS or INSEAD considering the present economic conditions and the post qualification job prospects.

It will be really appreciated if someone could please answer my questions!

Thanks a ton in advance,
Divine

More information is needed. The work experience is good, but the GMAT is below average for these schools. I know the LBS MFin is very competitive, while the INSEAD program might be less so since it is brand new.

Did you work for a bigger firm? Any promotions or leadership? UG major and GPA? Goals upon graduation? Stuff like that will make you stand out when applying.

As an accountant and from India, with a 650, INSEAD and LBS are likely out of range. If you wanted to apply to those schools, you would likely need at least a 700, if not more. And then it will still not be easy!

And yes, more information about you would help!

The average GMAT score at LBS Masters in Finance is 695 so as an Indian applicant a score higher than that would be the average. However, if you have a strong undergraduate Indian institution and grades that might compensate to an extent but you would still want to retake the GMAT and apply with a higher score.

Where do you want to do this degree? I don't know of too many (if any) European programs that offer this combination. In the US there are a few schools that offer and MSF and MBA track. Your GMAT is fine and you have a lot of experience. The thing is all the schools that offer this MBA and MSF option aren't really top MBA schools. Is that an issue? Need a little more clarity, but on paper you look fine.

Why this MSF addition? Seems like you could just do an MBA and study for the CFA on your own time if you want something really finance in depth.
