Hello,

I am new to the forum so I apologize if I have posted in the wrong place. I may have a choice of going into Big 4 Public Sector Consulting or going into Wells Fargo's UHNW boutique branch, Abbot Downing, as an analyst. I am a senior at a large state school. I was wondering, all else was equal, whether MBA (top 5) admissions would want a consultant from a Big 4 firm or an investment manager from Wells Fargo's Abbot Downing.

If I went Big 4 I would get my CPA and if I went Wells Fargo I would get my CFA. I have an interest in consulting and finance so either one would suit me well. I am just wondering about the prestige of each firm and their respective division.

Thanks!

Your query is very generic and too futuristic as well. First question which you should ask is what do you want to do? Consulting and Investments are entirely different careers all together. While on consulting you may be working on a lot of different projects ranging from 3 to 18 months and working with different clients, managing investments is an entirely different ball game. So deep delver a bit into both of them and decide which one of them would give you a more satisfying and rewarding work prospect. First choose a career which you want to be in and believe me later (if required) you will be able to choose an MBA that will suit you.

I think I would enjoy consulting more. I guess the question was more about the prestige (I know that may be shallow). But is Big 4 advisory (public practice) a good way to start off a consulting type career?

What is good or bad is totally contingent upon what you would want to to do later. Management consulting with the likes of Mckinsey, NCG, Booz, Bain, AT kearney is considered very prestigious because it is very challenging the kind of assignments these firms get are very complex, some even path breaking. Other than that there are niche consulting firms which specialize in a certain specific area. Again don't just jump on the opportunity that first comes your way, study the market, study the business and then take an informed decision.
