making do ... is it correct? Sounds unidiomatic to me ... C and D are out ..

do it and did it is incorrect ..

So by rejection ... IMO C

IMO B

i feel A & D are ruled out coz comma+ing form modifies the clause preceding it i.e., settlers used .. is like 'settlers usage is doing it without timber..' - awkward.

Any explanations guys?

It should be - D

A and B are out because it cannot refer to settlers
C - Wordy
E - incorrect.
