Independent clause, FANBOYS Independent clause

The MGMAT 4th edition mentions that the "and" connector should be used with a comma when "and" is used to connect two independent clauses. "AND" should not be preceded by a comma if the verbs before and after "and" have the same subject.

Example:
I study in the morning, and I play int he evening.
I study in the morning and play in the evening.


Is this rule true for other connecting words included in FANBOYS??

If you do not have two subjects and two verbs separated by the FANBOYS, you do not need to insert the comma before the FANBOYS. In other words, if the second grouping of words isn't a complete thought, don't use a comma. Try reading the words after FANBOYS all by themselves. Do they make a complete thought?

for some reason i just assumed that this rule is only true for connector "and". But i saw a lot of wrong answers that had this same issue with connector "but". Now, it makes sense.
