D

this follows the structure -- the more the skill the better the pay

'whether it is' is wordy between D and E

hmmm..nice

I think that 'whether' is preferred here as 'like' has a drawback -- using like can qualify only items 'like stamps' not stamps themselves. As opposed to 'such as'

a good one.

here the author wants to give examples of rare items...such as stamps to qualify how 'avidly' the collectors pursue.

consider the other sentence 'I have a strange ball like baseball at my home. => The 'ball' is not baseball however it only shares a few qualities.

whereas

such foods as avacados are good for health. => avacodoes include good food.
