Eval for Stern-Langone

by Bacon27 » Thu Jun 04, 2009 7:01 pm
Hi MBA Consultants,

I was looking into applying to The Langone Part time program with a specialization in entrepreneurship.
I'm currently 23 with a degree in Political Science from Drew University with honors, with a 3.5 GPA. I was also phi beta kappa. I plan to take the GMAT soon and apply for next spring.
I founded a successful retail company at 19 and I've expanded to several stores, so the part-time program is ideal for me to continue working. I'm looking to emphasize how I can use my education at Stern to enhance my work and vice versa.
I think my GMAT score will be pretty good and I'm very strong with verbal, but I'm concerned that my unique work experience might not fall within the general admissions criteria.
Could you please provide me with any recommendations/feedback regarding admissions chances?
Thanks.

Hello! Thanks for the good question and congratulaations on your fine academic record.

My quick and dirty take on this:

- Your work experience (starting a successful company) is, as I think you sense, not the typical background. And, while it probably wouldn't fly for some specializations (e.g., finance, operations) it makes enormous sense for an entrepeneurial focus. In other words, if you do an entrepeneurial focus I think you have a decent chance; without an ent. focus, I think your chances may not be so good.

A key element of your application will be talking about what your entrepeneurial vision for yourself is and what you want to do with your MBA. In other words, you should be asking yourself, what can I do with this MBA that I wouldn't be able to do otherwise?

- Your age is a limiting factor but, since you started the business when you were 19, you have some four or five years of work experience so --while not idea-- that seems like a surmountable hurdle.

In short, let me emphasize: the bar for you to clear is "Why does this person need an MBA?" and what is this person going to be able to achieve with an MBA that will be --put bluntly-- on a rough par with the Fortune 500 and I-banker types?

Cheers--

Paxton
