Please evaluate my profile

Indian/IT/Male

Age-25

CGPA: 8.62/10

gmat:710(q50 v37) awa-5

WE: 2.5 years in an IT consultancy giant. Role of an Individual performer. Client was one of the US top 3 banks and was offered a manager role subsequently by them in their IT captive in India. It has been 4 months with them till now. If I apply this year, would be 4 years by matriculation. Current Role: Managing a 13 member team. Involved in Hiring for other teams. I have taken an initiate to train other employees on Retail Banking domain and active in other employee engagement initiatives. I am also part of company's University Outreach program for recruiting graduates directly from colleges.

International Exp: 4 months in Germany on an internship.
3 months in US for an onsite assignment during my first job.

Foreign Language: Basic German

EC: President of Student's council of my college. The council is chosen by body of Associate directors and not by student voting. Organized multiple fest as part of it.

Community Service: None

Post MBA goals: I want to work in the finance sector(preferably in Retail banking) in future as all my experience is in that domain. I am also interested in Production/Operations management.

The reason I feel that this is the right time to do a MBA because another year of Work experience will not add anything more to my current profile. Reaching a position of team management in IT industry in India takes at least 5 years generally and I have achieved that in 3. I really suspect my chances of going any higher in the next 2-3 without an MBA.

I am wondering what B schools can I target with this profile. Can you please comment on my chances of admission to any of the below schools? Your feedback will be greatly appreciated.

HBS
Chicago Booth
MIT
Yale
Columbia

Thanks in Advance

Kunal

Hey there sir,
So, although you are coming from a tough applicant pool (I'm sure you know this :)) I really do like your leading a team of 13, and getting involved int he hiring process. This can be VERY strong stuff if you write your stories well. your international exp. is also unique, and you might wanna play that up in your application.

HBS, Booth and MIT will be a bit of a stretch for you. Columbia and Yale should be more attainable, but you also might want to add another school or two to your list.

As for your career switch to finance, that's something you might want to reconsider.
a) there are a LOT of indian candidates who want to switch to finance
b) its not necessarily the strongest time to be a finance candidate
c) you will be going up against people with a LOT of finance exp. who want to stay in finance, which might make it harder for you to match up to them.

Hope all this stuff help ya

Hi Jon

Thanks for your evaluation. Really appreciate it.

I agree to your point on finance. I do not want to switch to finance because that is what Indians mostly want to do but all my experience has been in Banking Domain in an IT organization. I currently work in the IT group of a major bank in US. If not Finance, I don't think Operations/Production would be possible either as I don't have any experience in it. Considering my profile, what do you think I should target to do major in?

You also mentioned HBS might be a stretch for me. I was wondering what else can I add to my profile to make it more impressive from a HBS standpoint. I know I haven't worked as an investment banker or been in an org such as Mckinsey.

Hey there Kunal,
I do understand your point about going into Banking, but still its something to consider. You have to realize that there are a LOT of IT Indian candidates working for the banking industry who want to move into finance :) So, the question is, is that the right goal? For example, would it not be better if you wrote something like "Wanting to work for an IT company that writes algorithms for trading" Which is both more up your line, and something that fewer candidates pursue? Hmmm, well I think this is something to work on with your consultant, if you do take one.

As for your second question, you got it: LEADERSHIP! Everywhere. In work, in your volunteer life, in your religious life and social life. Leadership.

Best to you!

Thanks Jon for the great insight.

Regarding the consultant. I do want to take one but not sure who is the best in business in India. There are so many around and they all say so many things. It just becomes difficult to believe in all they say and pick one.
