Hi, Could somebody please explain how to approach this one:

The senator rose up to say that, in her opinion, she thought the bill should be referred back to committee.

A

B) rose up to say that she thought the bill should be referred back

C) rose up to say that she thought the bill should be referred

D) rose up to say that, in her opinion, the bill should be referred

E) rose to say that she thought the bill should be referred


I think, some of the options change the meaning of the sentence.

Please advise. Thanks in advance.

I would choose E

Rose up is redundant since we cant rise down.

Rose implies up.

OA is indeed E. But dont you think "referred back" is different than "referred". Back tells us that the committee already did something with the bill and should do it again.

General Question: Lets say "referred back" is better, if in the test we have to make such a decision, how should we proceed.

Also, this question is from Barron's. I got the book from library so thought of doing some questions from this book as well. Does anybody know if the book is reliable. I had encountered one SC question, where 2 options were entirely same.

I think rose itself is sufficient .rose up is redundant.

'Referred back' and 'referred' are indeed different in meaning, and so there are less chances you'll get something which will force you to change the meaning in GMAT, and still be the right answer.

Avoid Barrons,its not worth it.
