by [email protected] » Thu Dec 06, 2012 7:24 am
In a period of time when women typically have had a narrow range of choices, Mary Baker Eddy became a distinguished writer and the founder, architect, and builder of a growing church.

[A] In a period of time when women typically have

During a time in which typically women have

[C] Typically, during a time when women

[D] At a time when women typically

[E] Typically in a time in which women

The OA given is D.

The underlined part is in the past perfect tense and the other action where Mary became something something is in the simple past tense. Could you please tell me that why A and B are wrong and then why D is correct.

You are talking about a single period of time, requiring the use of the simple past.

Past perfect is used when something occurs over a period of time or to show order of events.

The Underlined portion talks about the time before Eddy became......

Past perfect tense is used to describe the older of the two actions taking place in the past.

have had would be wrong verb tense (Past perfect continuous) I guess because It'll denote that the TIME still prevails...

Not really. It is similar to:

At the time when India was ruled by British, Gandhiji became a champion of freedom.

As you would appreciate, the above sentence does not talk about a time before Gandhiji became to champion of freedom.

As Mitch likes to say, these are contemporaneous events.

Also by the way, A and B use present perfect not past perfect.

I didn't get you.
Can you please explain more about the usage of have had and contemporaneous events?

have + Past Pariticiple is Present Perfect

For example: I have done it. (have + the Past Participle of the verb do)

Similarly, have had is have + the Past participle of the verb have.

contemporaneous means: occurring or existing at the same time; in other words, neither of the incident precedes or succeeds the other.

So EducationAisle, even you think that the OA should be between A and B right. To make the events occur at the same time. Even I think the same thing.

Could you elaborate on your point please.
