HELP pls -gmat ON FRI

Galileo did not invent the telescope, but on hearing, in 1609, that such an optical instrument had been made, he quickly built his own device from an organ pipe and spectacle lenses.

A. Galileo did not invent the telescope, but on hearing, in 1609, that such an optical instrument had been made, he
B. Galileo had not invented the telescope, but when he heard, in 1609, of such an optical instrument having been made,
C. Galileo, even though he had not invented the telescope, on hearing, in 1609, that such an optical instrument had been made, he
D. Even though Galileo did not invent the telescope, on hearing, in 1609, that such an optical instrument had been made,
E. Even though Galileo did not invent the telescope, but when he heard, in 1609, of such an optical instrument being made, he


Some one told me that E is a double negative! cna someone pelase explain why

I don't know how E, whether or not a double negative could impact the answer, but A is the correct answer.

past participle required in 'such instrument had been made' portion of the sentence. 'having been made' in B is wrong as it illogically conveys that telescope is being built and that 'having been' is wordy. C introduces a number of paraphrases and seperates verb from subject. D is a basic run on. And E, like B is wordy in using 'being made'.

I have never heard of constructions like E being called double negatives. Double negatives are things like We neither need no food nor no water which resolves to We need both food and water; choice E simply uses "but" to join two clauses that are not parallel (even though . . . is a dependent clause, when he heard . . . . is independent).
