As Pearls Do

by GhassanMBA » Sun Jan 24, 2010 11:07 am
Hello all I got this one wrong. And it seems that the Like vs As issue is becoming a problem for me. Here's the question:

More than 30 years ago Dr. Barbara McClintock, the Nobel Prize winner, reported that genes can "jump,"as pearls moving mysteriously from one necklace to another.

A) as pearls moving mysteriously from one necklace to another
B) like pearls moving mysteriously from one necklace to another
C) as pearls do that move mysteriously from one necklace to others
D) like pearls do that move mysteriously from one necklace to others
E) as do pearls that move mysteriously from one necklace to some other one

The OA is B
I however, chose E. I know E is really awkward and strange at the end with "to some other one" but I had eliminated B and D because we use "like" to compare nouns example: "Your jacket is like mine". And we use "as" to compare actions or verbs example: "She didn't go to France, as I did". I felt that "as" should be used here and not "like".

I hope someone can clarify this point. perhaps i've got it wrong or backwards or something.
Thanks

@ghassan
U should NOT have eliminated B
In B we are indeed comparing NOUNS only
I know why u got confused ;-) You might have considered MOVING to be a verb

Remember
verb-ING i.e ING form of the verb is not a verb
and
we use LIKE with NOUNS or PHRASES, and phrases do not have VERBS ... moving is not a verb

coming to ur question on E

E) as do pearls that move mysteriously from one necklace to some other one

> placement of DO before PEARLS is perfect
> AS is not required here, look upthread
> one necklace to some other one --- this, ONE creates issue

hope it helps..

jump and move are both used here as verbs however the thing to note is the usage of like here is to compare genes to pearls thus like is okay here.

Consider these:
Dance like no one is watching you.
Mary looks like Annie
both "dance" and "looks" are verbs but what is being compared by "like" is a noun - you in the first eg

btw your example ""She didn't go to France, as I did" doesn't sound right to me at all since what is being compared really is she vs me and the meaning of your sentence is ambiguous; I can't answer if you are saying you went to France or just like you she didn't go to France.

Well, anyways, I haven't been to France like so many other Indians and like so many of them I would love to go there someday!
unlike me, my parents have been to France...
