by gheemo » Mon Aug 30, 2010 6:48 pm
Hello - can anyone help explain some DS questions from my GMATPrep exam?

1) Are positive integers p and q both greater than n?

1) p - q is greater than n
2) q > p

Answer is C (both sufficient)

2) Juan bought some paperback books that cost $8 each and some hardcover books that cost $25 each. If Juan bought more than 10 paperback books, how many hardcover books did he guy?

1) The total cost of the hardcover books that Juan bought was at least $150
2) The total cost of all the books that Juan bought was less than $260

Answer is C (both sufficient)

3) All the clients that Company X had at the beginning of last year remained with the company for the whole year. If Company X acquired new clients during the year, what was the ratio of the number of clients that Company X had at the end of last year to the number of clients it had at the beginning of last year?

1) The ratio of the number of clients that Company X had at the beginning of last year to the number of new clients that it acquired during the year was 12 to 1.
2) Company X had 144 clients at the beginning of last year.

Answer is A (statement 1 is sufficient)

C is not both suff it is both are together suff neither statment alone is suff.

1.

p,q>n ?

1. p-q>n

if p=10 and q=2 n=3

p-q=8 p-q>n but q<n

if p=10 and q=7 n=3

p-q=3 but p-q=n

so not suff A,D out

2.q>p

what what does this say about n we can say anything so not suff B out left C and E

combine P-q>n and Q>p say p=5 q=7 p-q>n -2 >n hence n must be negative so p and q always greater than n

so C

2.

paperback book @ $8 and hardcover books@$25 paperback books> 10 hardcover =?

1.atleast $150 means atleast 6 hardcover books but hw much not clear not suff A,D out

2.total book cost<$260

$8*paperbooks+$25 hardcoverbooks<$260
$80+$25hardcover<$260

so cant say anything not suff B out left C and E

combine 1 and 2 $80+$150=$230 < $260

hence suff so C

3.

here we want ratio of no of clients at the end of last year to no of client it had at the beginning of last year

1. no of client at the begining of last year to at the end of year=12:1

so we required opposite of this i.e 1:12

hence suff.

2. company had 144 client as we need ratio this doesnt help hence not suff.

hope this helps
