The Question:

Mixture A is 15 percent alcohol, and mixture B is 50 percent alcohol. If the two are poured together to create a 4-gallon mixture that contains 30 percent alcohol, approximately how many gallons of mixture A are in the mixture?

2.3

2.5

3.0

Mixture A contains x gallons.

Mixture B contains y gallons.

Amount of alcohol in Mixture A= .15(x)

Amount of alcohol in Mixture B=.5(x)

x+y=4

.15(x)+.5(y)=1.2

y=4-x

.15(x)+.5(4-x)=1.2

.15(x)+2-.5(x)=1.2

2-.35x=1.2

-.8=-.35x

x~2.3 gallons C.
