global warming

by ketkoag » Sat Jul 18, 2009 8:54 am
"If global warming continues at its present pace, the Arctic will shrink," said the environmentalist. "So all that is needed to save the Arctic is to stop global warming," said the geologist.

Which one of the following statements is consistent with the environmentalist's claim but not with the geologist's claim?

(A) Global warming continues and the Arctic shrinks.
(B) Global warming is stopped and the Arctic shrinks.
(C) Global cooling begins and the Arctic doesn’t shrink.
(D) Global warming is slowed and the Arctic doesn’t shrink.
(E) Global warming is slowed and the Arctic shrinks.

D for me as well

A. consistent with both

B. against both

C. out of scope

D. consistent with environmentalist. not consistent with geologist because as per him, only stoppage of global warming can save Arctic from shrinking. correct

IMO D as well. Same reasoning as scoobydooby so I'm not going to restate the same logic.

D - for sure.

Environmentalist says - continues at current pace - Arctic will shrink.

So let's say its current pace is +5 degrees per year. If it continues at +5 degrees per year, then arctic will shrink.

Geologist says - in order to save arctic, we must STOP global warming. So the pace must go to <=+0 degrees a year in order to save the arctic.

A = Global warming continues is ambiguous. +1 degree per year or +7 degrees per year. It's unclear to what extent so it doesn't necessarily agree with the environmentalist. A is wrong.
B = inconsistent with both.
C = Consistent with Both
D = Correct - Cconsistent with environmentalist because it is SLOWING. So its +1,2,3 degrees a year. It's slowing - therefore will not shrink. But Geologist says - global warming needs to stop.
E. Inconsistent with both

This question is a matter of slowing down vs. stopping completely.

The answer cannot be D, because it doesn't disagree with the geologist... he doesn't make any arguments regarding the slowing of global warming; in fact, he could have argued that regardless of the amount of global warming, the Arctic will keep shrinking. We can only make claims when global warming stops. This is definitely B.

However, B is also CONSISTENT with the environmentalist; the environmentalist isn't wrong here... all he says is that if global warming continues at this pace, then the Arctic will shrink. However, he mentions nothing about global warming changing pace! This is CONSISTENT with the environmentalist.

By the way, I typed consistent in all caps to indicate that consistent isn't the same thing as agreeing. Consistent just means to not disagree.

Therefore, the answer has to be B.
Have you wondered how you could have found such a treasure? -T

D should be the answer
"Native of" is used for a individual while "Native to" is used for a large group
