Survey Statistics

by sushbis » Sun Jun 19, 2011 11:33 pm
An annual survey ranked City B as the sixth most dangerous city of 371 surveyed, using uniform crime statistics records kept by the FBI. City B's mayor disputed the report's conclusions, noting both the recent reduction in the city's crime rate and the FBI's cautions against using uniform statistics to make comparisons between metropolitan areas.

Which of the following, if true, represents the best piece of evidence to be used in support of the mayor's objection?

1> According to the same survey the previous year, City B was ranked as only the tenth most dangerous.
2> The survey examined statistics for entire counties, but ranked the most dangerous according to the name of the most populous city.
3> The mayor is planning to run for re-election and has personal reasons for wanting City B to seem less dangerous.
4> Statistics demonstrate that metropolitan areas are more dangerous than rural areas.
5> City B's crime statistics are reported to the FBI on a quarterly, rather than an annual, basis.

A and C are weakening. D is neutral.POE.
between B and E,

E quarterly reporting gives a hint that may be the crime rate is reduced. But not a direct inference.POE.

1> According to the same survey the previous year, City B was ranked as only the tenth most dangerous.--> it does not support major's conclusion. OOS
2> The survey examined statistics for entire counties, but ranked the most dangerous according to the name of the most populous city.-->Correct! The listing is formed as cities names taking their popularity into consideration. So being in the list may also mean to be a popular city!
3> The mayor is planning to run for re-election and has personal reasons for wanting City B to seem less dangerous.-->OOS
4> Statistics demonstrate that metropolitan areas are more dangerous than rural areas.-->Comparion is meaningless coz we do not have any info about rural areas! 5> City B's crime statistics are reported to the FBI on a quarterly, rather than an annual, basis.-->Frequency of the report does not prove anything!
The more you suffer before the test, the less you will do so in the test! :)
