Need some serious advice please

by psyborg » Mon Dec 15, 2008 10:43 pm
Heylo,

Just gave the Gmat this saturday and scored a 560(Q43 V 25). Im still wondering what went wrong and what do I need to do
However this is not too far from what I was scoring on the Gmt prep etc.

I had finished the OG - 11, Kaplan, Manhattan SC
Gmat prep 1 - 570
Gmat prep 2 - 610
Ims test 1 - 580
Kaplan 1 - 540
Kaplan 2 - 570

I need some serious advice here and someone to answer a few queries I had. I have applied to the following colleges and im sure I need to give the Gmat exam again. The score I have got now is not going to help me get in to any of these colleges. I have done my IT engineering and currently working at Jp Morgan since 1.5 years in IB derivatives - credit (yes not doing IT anymore), ill have finished 2 years by the time I quit.

The deadline for all these colleges is somewhere around 6th / 7th or 12 th Jan. So now if I apply, will my second score overlap the first, how does this work, do I apply with this score now and there is some kind of clause saying new scores will be taken, or should I apply in the second round?

Does it make a difference if I give the Gmat the second time.

I was suppose to give my TOEFL on 21st but now there are no *%@#ing seats available. So I will have to take my TOEFL on 12th Jan? Can I apply without my TOEFL scores in hand? Wat do I do?

I would really appreciate if some of you experienced guys out there could suggest wat I need to do now

Cheers
P.s - Sorry for the long post

Colleges :
1. Boston University
2. Univ NC - Kenan Flagler
3. CMU - Tepper
4. UCLA Anderson
5.Univ of Texas - Red McCombs - Austin

Hi there,

So it sounds like you have quite a few levels of questions and concerns; first of all the concern of how to improve your GMAT score, secondly the concern of meeting deadlines and the process there.

In terms of your score, you could certainly see some improvement if you re-take, and in the meantime work hard on the areas you need most improvement in. Prioritize your math/verbal, and within each section, what topics and question types are you weaker in. Be sure you are practicing with several full-length tests and focusing on your timing as well.

Generally if you take the GMAT multiple times, the MBA programs will accept your highest score. However, if your re-take is after the deadline, it is not guaranteed that they will look at that later score. You should contact the schools about this question. I'm not sure what the seat-availaibility is prior to the deadlines, or whether you'll be able to do some serious studying right now, but usually if you do take the test by the date of the deadline, that will still count for that round.

Let us know if you have more specific questions, and good luck!

Hi Jen,

Thanks for your reply
I think your correct, it would be best to consult the colleges itself

Also for the colleges I have applied, honestly does it make sense to try and write some super essays and give it a shot
Or I would have to improve my score conseidering I have only 2 years of work experience

Is giving the Gmat again and applying for round 3 better? Or ppl who apply for the final round have slim chances unless your exceptionally strong.

These colleges are ranked pretty high.. and I would like to go to the best (im sure everyone would like to)

Happy to see any advice you could provide

Thanks again!

Hi again,

Deciding when to apply, both in terms of when it makes sense for you and also when you think you have created the best application you can, is a very personal decision. Certainly one view is that it's always worth a shot, if you are willing to put in the time and cost of submitting applications. However, the best advice is to apply when you do feel you have the best application possible...your chances will certainly be best then.

At this point, your GMAT score is lower than the average at the programs you mention, 2 years of work experience is less than the average at the programs (though most of those programs would still consider it), and you have very limited time to create strong essays if looking at 2nd round, if you have not started already. So it would be quite difficult to put your best foot forward at this point in time. As for 3rd round, of course students are accepted then too, but it's also true that the schools have most likely given out a majority of their seats by the final deadlines, and also there is often a rush of applications for the final rounds, as unfortunately many people wait til the last minute. So it is possible, but challenging, to get in during final deadlines.

Overall, though, you need to decide what is best for you and your career, at this point in time versus in the future. If you have reasons for seriously wanting or needing to start b-school in 09, you could try 3rd round with an improved GMAT and lots of time spent on your essays, and reapply next year if needed. Or if you'd rather just do it once and do it right, you might consider waiting. Good luck with your decision!
