Just an OK score after all

by Aditya57 » Thu Jul 28, 2011 2:53 am
I've written my GMAT a week ago ,21st July 2011 and scored a 680 (q=49, v=33 and AWA a 5.5.) I was confident enough of scoring around 700+ but the excuses don't matter now.I've just graduated (0 yrs work ex) and have a month of free time with me before I start working . Do you people think it's advisable for me to retake the test again within the next month and use the scores after three years or should I wait two years and then take it (planning to do MBA course in 2014). Considering the fact that I might not have the zeal and time what I have now to study and on the other hand I would be better off with more preparation and newer patterns later.

As for the exam ,in quant I got as many as 4 probability questions which suggested that I had done well till q 27 and in verbal I got a bold face ,however my timing was very poor ,I had to rush through the last 5 in math and 7(incl a R.C) in verbal. I normally solve the quant quickly in my practise tests but nerves made my entire timing go off balance. Please suggest how I can better manage my timing in my future endevaours.
Thanks

Hi Aditya,

It's a good score. But yes, if you need to go to the top schools, a better score will help you especially if you plan to start as early as 2014 (you will have only 3 yrs work ex then). Just ask yourself if you think you really can improve your score. If you think you can, go ahead and take it. But I will advise you that if you are applying after 3-4 years, your score will soon become invalid and eventually after 5 years you may have to take it again. So you be the best judge.

Also keep in mind that when you retake, you also have to keep your verbal score consistent and not just improve quant.

You had the Reasoning section at the end. How did it go?
Vineesh,
Just telling you what I know and think. I am not the expert. :)

hey vineesh,
retake is definitely on my agenda .it's not the question of if but a question of when i'm going to write.
IR is a pretty difficult section after a 3 1/2 hour exam and concentration is pretty difficult then ,however the questions are all very lengthy so maybe 12 in 30 min seem reasonable. The problems were kind of having strengthen and weaken types ,plus median values, find the length for the mode value etc and all math involved. GMAT is going to be pretty difficlut come aug 2012

Ya but the section is actually going to replace one of the AWAs. So it wont be as tough as you had it, but ya tougher. :(
