CR - Strengthner & EXCEPT

by karthikpandian19 » Thu Jul 12, 2012 7:36 pm
A study conducted by the department of health on textile factory workers who work with polyulsterene, a newly developed synthetic fiber, discovered that an alarmingly high number of these workers complained of nausea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite. Since the use of polyulsterene for a variety of garments is expected to increase dramatically in the coming year, local health departments can expect to encounter a noticeable increase in the number of patients complaining of nausea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite.

Each of the following, if true, strengthens the argument EXCEPT:

(A) The vast majority of textile factory workers who do not work with polyulsterene did not complain of nausea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, or any other major health problems.

(B) According to the department of health, nausea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite are all symptoms that can often be the early warning signs of a potentially very serious medical condition.

(C) Local departments of health in the few cities in which clothing made with polyulsterene has already been introduced have reported increased complaints of nausea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite.

(D) Individuals who wear clothing made with only polyulsterene have a much higher incidence of symptoms such as nausea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite than do individuals who do not wear clothing made with polyulsterene at all.

(E) The textile factory workers surveyed were handpicked by researchers so as to be a highly representative cross-section of the population with regard to factors such as previous medical history

A/B/C strengthens. Between D and E i am a little bit confused.
D - this seems to be irrelevant, the argument speaks about textile workers involved in the usage of that polyusterne product during production while D speaks about end users i.e those who use the product which has that polusterene. Not sure if the usage of the end product will affect or not.

E - the researches ensured that the problem is not because of previous medical history in the survey. So its confusing

IMO E.
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.

the answer should be B. D and E both strengthen the argument.

(B) only talks about how these symptoms are early signs of a serious disease. It is not strengthening the argument and should be correct.

Each of the following, if true, strengthens the argument EXCEPT:
Argument makes series of casual relationship to arrive at its conclusion:(1) high nos of workers working with polyulsterene report NAL (nausea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite),
(2) more people will use polyulsterene garments in future,
(3) high nos of patients of NAL

(1) --> (2) --> (3)

Strengthener EXCEPT - correct choice will be either a weakener or a crap

Weakener means NOS OF NAL PATIENTS "WILL not increase" (opposite of 3); Crap means completely irrelevent to argument

(A) The vast majority of textile factory workers who do not work with polyulsterene did not complain of nausea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, or any other major health problems.
Justifies the results of survey; It suggests that work with polyulsterene is ACTUALLY LEADING to NAL
(B) According to the department of health, nausea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite are all symptoms that can often be the early warning signs of a potentially very serious medical condition.
Gives no information whether NOS OF NAL PATIENTS WILL increase or decrease in future (just says NAL symptoms implies serious medical problems, but we are concerned not about whether NAL becomes serious but rather about whether NOS of NAL PATIENTS increases/decreases; IRRELEVENT

(C) Local departments of health in the few cities in which clothing made with polyulsterene has already been introduced have reported increased complaints of nausea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite.
It confirms USE OF polyulsterene clothing is ACTUALLY LEADING to NAL (strengethens 2--> 3) so strengthens

(D) Individuals who wear clothing made with only polyulsterene have a much higher incidence of symptoms such as nausea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite than do individuals who do not wear clothing made with polyulsterene at all.
It confirms USE OF polyulsterene clothing is ACTUALLY LEADING to NAL (strengethens 2--> 3) so strengthens

(E) The textile factory workers surveyed were handpicked by researchers so as to be a highly representative cross-section of the population with regard to factors such as previous medical history
Confirm that the survey results are representative so strengthens
IMO B

+1 for B. Rest all strengthens the argument.
E states that representatives were fair, so it strengthens the argument.
Please share the OE.

Each of the following, if true, strengthens the argument EXCEPT:
This is a latent causal reasoning question.

Premise: People working with PUS (my abbreviation for polyusterene, I don't want to type the whole thing) are complaining of nausea, abdominal pain and loss of apetite.
Conclusion: Since more PUS is going to be in the market in the future, more people will show the symptoms above. (In essence they are saying that PUS is causing the symptoms).

We expect to encounter four statements that strengthen the conclusion and one which doesn't.
With that in mind let's look at the options:

(A) The vast majority of textile factory workers who do not work with polyulsterene did not complain of nausea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, or any other major health problems.
This one strengthens by saying that in absence of PUS, a vast majority of people did not feel the symptoms, implying that PUS was causing the symptoms in others. NO.

(B) According to the department of health, nausea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite are all symptoms that can often be the early warning signs of a potentially very serious medical condition.
This is a factual statement made by the health department. It has nothing to do with the argument. These symptoms can be warning signs or not, it doesn`t affect the conclusion that PUS is causing the symptoms. This one neither strengthens nor weakens. CORRECT.

(C) Local departments of health in the few cities in which clothing made with polyulsterene has already been introduced have reported increased complaints of nausea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite.
Again, further proof that PUS is causing the symptoms. Strengthens the conclusion. NO.

(D) Individuals who wear clothing made with only polyulsterene have a much higher incidence of symptoms such as nausea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite than do individuals who do not wear clothing made with polyulsterene at all.
Similar to C. People wearing only PUS clothing show the symptoms in greater percentage than the PUS-free cloth wearers. Strengthens. NO.

(E) The textile factory workers surveyed were handpicked by researchers so as to be a highly representative cross-section of the population with regard to factors such as previous medical history.
This one tells us that the statistical data collected was "highly representative". This strengthens by contradicting a potential weakener that "data was biased/non-representative". By removing a potential weakener, this one strengthens the conclusion as well.NO.

Hence B is the correct STRENGTHEN, EXCEPT answer.

Cheers!
