Mayville Airport and Newcomb Airport have the same number of flight departures each day. Mayville Airport
experiences 26 departure delays per 100 flights, while Newcomb Airport experiences 20 departure delays per 100
flights. When delays caused by bad weather are disregarded, Mayville Airport has 5 fewer departure delays per
100 flights than Newcomb Airport does. Which of the following conclusions is best supported by the information
given above?
"¢ Bad weather causes a greater number of departure delays at Mayville Airport than at Newcomb Airport.
"¢ On average, the weather at Mayville Airport is worse than it is at Newcomb Airport.

In the conclusion questions the answer must follow from the stimulus given and it should be supported by facts given in the stimulus.

Let us prephrase directionally, say Newcomb's non-weather related delays stack up to 17 (3 are weather related) than Mayville has to be 12 (thus weather related = 25 - 12 = 13), no matter what value is taken fro Newcomb, weather related delays for Mayville will be greater than for Newcomb.

Looking at the choices:
A - Smack on! Keep
B - Looks good, weather is bad that is why flights at Mayville delayed more than Newcomb due to weather. Keep
C - Fails the facts, we do not know about mechanical issues. Discard.
D - Could be could not be, facts not given.
E - Fails the facts, do not know about arrivals .......discard

Contenders:
A and B.

A looks really good.
B - what if on average the weather in Mayville is good throughout the day (better than Newcomb) but for the slot 5 Am to 9 Am when 40% of the flights leave the weather gets really bad and leads to a lot of delays. In a hypothetical situaiton like this, the "average" weather at Mayville could be better than Newcomb yet lead to more delays........Hence B is not a water tight conclusion, whereas A is......

If 5 delays are deducted from MayVille airport, the number of delays is still 21 against 20 delays at NewComb airport.Hence C.

Is this reasoning right?

I paraphrased the conclusion before reading the answer choices. Number of flights delayed due to bad weather at M is 1 more than at N.

A - contender.
B - loser. There could be lot of differences between these airports and air fleets which can cause the delay even the weather is different.
C - Pick the numbers here. M : 13 -13 and N: 12 - 8. 8 < 13 so it is not true.
D - There is no information given on fleets.
E - Out of the scope.

3rd Line of the CR stem gives the answer as (A).
Definitely weather is the main reason for greater number of delays at theMayville Airport

"¢ On average, the weather at Mayville Airport is worse than it is at Newcomb Airport. - We can't say that. Maybe the MA isn't better equipped to handle the weather delays so despite the lower number as compared to NA it might bear after effects for several days

"¢ Mechanical problems cause a greater number of delays at Newcomb Airport than at Mayville Airport. - The passage has only talked about weather delays. Rest fall in other delays. How mechanical causes problems at both can't be commented upon.

"¢ The fleet of airplanes leaving from Newcomb Airport is better equipped to handle inclement weather than the fleet of airplanes leaving from Mayville Airport. - Again. Can't be proved per the fact test

"¢ Mayville Airport experiences a greater number of arrival delays per 100 flights than Newcomb Airport does.- OFS. We are only concerned with Delay flights.
