Stronger Patent Laws ......

Expert replies

Stronger patent laws are needed to protect inventions from being pirated. With that protection, manufacturers would be encouraged to invest in the development of new products and technologies. Such investment frequently results in an increase in a manufacturer’s productivity.

Which of the following conclusions can most properly be drawn from the information above?

(A) Stronger patent laws tend to benefit financial institutions as well as manufacturers.

(B) Increased productivity in manufacturing is likely to be accompanied by the creation of more manufacturing jobs.

(C) Manufacturers will decrease investment in the development of new products and technologies unless there are stronger patent laws.

(D) The weakness of current patent laws has been a cause of economic recession.

(E) Stronger patent laws would stimulate improvements in productivity for many manufacturers.

C

SPL -> Increased investment & productivity

contrapositive is

! ( Increased investment & productivity ) -> ! SPL

=

(Decreased investment & productivity ) -> ! SPL

I was torn between C & E but picked up C. Whats the OA?

The recent set of 7-8 questions have been picked from some website.
The answers were not given..but i found them to be good ...So i posted.

In this particular one, my choice is E because it will lead to higher productivity at one manufacturer ..hence forcing(stipulating) others also to increase productivity..!
Thanks

I see what you are saying. But the main goal of SPL as per the stimulus is to increase the investment in new products and technologies. A bye product is increased productivity. We are talking about conclusion here and needs to be close to the premises. We know that SPL will encourage increased investment. It is possible that if there are no SPL's the investment will drop because of the lack of control on one's inventions.

Why would any company want to invest in R & D if their inventions can be easily copied and this company cannot challenge the company that copied its invention? Also, for "many" manufactures seems a little bit vague to me.

As I said I was torn between C & E.

(E) is definitely correct.

As Netigen aptly points out, a lack of increase does NOT necessarily mean a decrease - therefore, we can't properly conclude that (c) will happen.

Remember, the answer to an inference question is something that MUST be true based on what's stated or implied by 1 or more of the sentences in the stimulus. (C) could be true, but it's also possible that manufacturers will maintain their current level of investment (another form of "not increasing"). Therefore, (C) isn't a "must be true".

@Stuart, isnt E too generic.. I mean stronger patent laws would help only those manufacturers that will actually invent.. So E seemed too broad.

The fastest way to clear the confusion is to use the Kaplan's method of denial - say (E) was false.

Stronger patent laws will NOT stimulate
improvements in productivity for
many manufacturers.

If the above is correct, then the complete statement becomes invalid. (E) has to be true for the statement to hold true.

Answer E seems to be logical one out of other answer choices
