Adults.

Adults have the right to vote; so should adolescents. Admittedly, adolescents and adults are not the same. But to the extent that adolescents and adults are different, adults cannot be expected to represent the interests of adolescents. If adults cannot represent the interests of adolescents, then only by giving adolescents the vote will these interests represented.

The statement that adolescents and adults are not the same plays which one of the following roles in the argument?

(A) It presents the conclusion of the argument.
(B) It makes a key word in the argument more precise.
(C) It illustrates a consequence of one of the claims that are used to support the conclusion.
(D) It distracts attention from the point at issue.
(E) It concedes a point that is then used to support the conclusion.

E is right.

A - The conclusion of the argument is Adults have the right to vote; so should adolescents and not adolescents and adults are not the same.

B - I guess the key word in the argument is adolescence. But the statement is not making it any precise.

C - adolescents and adults are not the same. is not a consequence of any claim. The claim is that adolescents should get a vote. However adolescents and adults are not the same is not a consequence of that claim. Rather, this statement is used to justify the claim.

D - Quite the contrary, this statement is critical to the argument. Based on this statement, it has been argued that adults cannot represent the interests of adolescents, so adolescents should get a vote.

E - Correct. Use of admittedly signifies that the author is conceding a point. Then the author uses this same point to show how adults cannot represent the interests of adolescents and so adolescents should have the right to vote, which is the conclusion of the argument.
