Bovo's Dairy Farm

by kartikshah » Mon Jul 16, 2012 4:30 am
A regional increase in domestic cheese-making has produced a significant upsurge in the local demand for milk. In response, Bovo's Dairy farm intends to expand over the next few years, with the goal of more than doubling the farm's overall milk production. The current plans involves adding on a new wing, rearranging and resizing current cow enclosures, and purchasing a significant number of new dairy cows.

Which of the following MUST be the case if Bovo's dairy farm is to achieve its aim?

1. The new wing will not, at maximum capacity, contain fewer cows than are currently housed at the dairy farm
2. Cheese production, and the corresponding demand for milk, will not see any decline over the next few years as the farm's plans are implemented.
3. The cost of purchasing, feeding and housing the additional cows, when combined with construction costs will be less than the additional profit expected through higher sales of milk.
4. There is no shortage of available dairy cows in the counties immediately surrounding Bovo's farm.
5. Any per cow percentage decrease in milk production brought about by increased crowding will be less than half the percentage increase in the number of cows on the farm.

The correct answer choice is E but I'm not convinced. Isn't that too specific?

Please explain.

A - incorrect, as the wing is going to be ADDED and it will not REPLACE the old wing
B - this is irrelevant, we are taking into consideration the present situation and we cannot predict such changes
C - the farm's goal is to double the MILK PRODUCTION and not the profits - incorrect
D - irrelevant, the farm can buy cows from more distant counties
E - correct, this is the only answer choice which mentions a situation which can influence the MILK PRODUCTION

Kasia: Thanks for your reply. I still did not understand on what grounds you eliminated A.
Please elaborate.

I will try to help...
let's say the farm now owns 100 cows, even if the new wing can hold only 90 cows, if these 90 cows can produce more milk than the 100 cows in the original farm, the production can still be doubled, therefore, this does not have to be true

hopefully it helps :)
