CR - Infer conclusion

by karthikpandian19 » Sat Jun 30, 2012 3:30 am
Pregnant women are advised to get a sufficient amount of vitamin D to decrease the risk that their offspring will contract rickets, a vitamin deficiency disorder that causes skeletal deformation. Vitamin D is produced in skin that is exposed to UVB radiation found in sunlight.

Which of the following statements can be inferred from the passage above?

(A) Newborn babies should be exposed to UVB radiation to decrease their chances of getting rickets.

(B) Pregnant women who do not get enough sunlight run a high risk of having babies with skeletal deformation in subsequent pregnancies.

(C) Exposure to UVB radiation is the most effective way to reduce skeletal deformations in babies.

(D) Pregnant women can reduce the risk that their children will contract rickets by getting UVB radiation from sunlight.

(E) Exposing themselves to sunlight is the only way for a pregnant women to prevent their unborn childred from contracting rickets.

Which of the following statements can be inferred from the passage above?

(A) Newborn babies should be exposed to UVB radiation to decrease their chances of getting rickets. -- The argument is about pregnant mothers

(B) Pregnant women who do not get enough sunlight run a high risk of having babies with skeletal deformation in subsequent pregnancies. --- This cannot be inferred because the passage does not say that sun rays are the only source of Vitamin D

(C) Exposure to UVB radiation is the most effective way to reduce skeletal deformations in babies.--Again this is not suggested by the passage.

(D) Pregnant women can reduce the risk that their children will contract rickets by getting UVB radiation from sunlight. --- This is absolutely true and the best inference we can make

(E) Exposing themselves to sunlight is the only way for a pregnant women to prevent their unborn childred from contracting rickets.--- Again, too big an inference.

OA is D

The passage tells us that vitamin D is important to pregnant women because it reduces the risk that their children will be born with rickets. We are also informed that UVB radiation found in sunlight triggers the production of vitamin D.

Based on this information, we need to identify what must be true. If vitamin D prevents rickets (skeletal deformation) and UVB radiation in sunlight helps the production of vitamin D, we can conclude that by getting more vitamin D in the form of UVB radiation from sunlight, a pregnant women reduces the risk that her child will contract rickets. This is restated in choice D, which is correct.

Choice A is out of the scope of the argument because the passage makes no mention of any benefits derived from newborn babies being exposed to radiation or vitamin D.

Choice B states that women who do not get enough sunlight run the risk of having children with skeletal deformation in the future. The passage does not mention future births, we just know that women should get enough sunlight during pregnancy.

Choice C is incorrect because the passage does not mention any other methods of reducing the risk of skeletal deformations, so it offers no way to make a comparison that could determine the most effective method.

Choice E is extreme; we don't know if getting sunlight is the only way to prevent rickets.

Choice D is correct.
