critical reasoning flight

by budetta4 » Fri Feb 12, 2010 10:26 am
Northern air is a new carrier serving the flying public with regular routes between major cities in the northwest. Despite the fact that Mammoth Airlines services more airports within a larger geographic area,Northern Air is generating record profits while Mmmoth Airlines continues operate at a net loss

which one help to resolve the paradox:

A on shorter routes, pilotes are not required to climb to the same altitude as they are on longer routes, and a shorter climb expends less fuel
B Northern Air recently implemented a series of cost cutting measures including the elimination of in-flight meal service
C As the much larger employer, Mammoth A. must regularly negotiate with trade unions while North. Air has not been unionized .
D Due to their reputation of excellent customer service and on-time arrivals,North. Air can charge a premium for their class sets
E Northern Air's more modern system allow cucustomers to monitor flight statuses and request class of service pgrades

A on shorter routes, pilotes are not required to climb to the same altitude as they are on longer routes, and a shorter climb expends less fuel
Incorrect : They are saving on fuel but that does not mean they are generating profits.

B Northern Air recently implemented a series of cost cutting measures including the elimination of in-flight meal service
Incorrect : ------ Same as A ------

C As the much larger employer, Mammoth A. must regularly negotiate with trade unions while North. Air has not been unionized .
Incorrect : Out of Scope

D Due to their reputation of excellent customer service and on-time arrivals,North. Air can charge a premium for their class sets
Correct : This is bringing in revenues for Northern Air....

E Northern Air's more modern system allow customers to monitor flight statuses and request class of service pgrades
Incorrect : No clue as to why this would help generate revenue.

A on shorter routes, pilotes are not required to climb to the same altitude as they are on longer routes, and a shorter climb expends less fuel
nothing to do with profits/loss. Eliminated!
B Northern Air recently implemented a series of cost cutting measures including the elimination of in-flight meal service
has something to profit/loss.. let's keep it.
C As the much larger employer, Mammoth A. must regularly negotiate with trade unions while North. Air has not been unionized .
ok, so what regular negotiation does not equate to increase in expenditure. Eliminated!
D Due to their reputation of excellent customer service and on-time arrivals,North. Air can charge a premium for their class sets
charging a premium does not necessarily equate to an increase in profit. Eliminated!
E Northern Air's more modern system allow cucustomers to monitor flight statuses and request class of service pgrades
nothing to do with profit/loss. Eliminated!

Since we are only left with one choice, B is the answer

I choose B too but the real answer choice is E
According to catprep E is the only one that help Northern Air to increase its revenue whereas all the other answer choices only help to cut costs

Which one help to resolve the paradox???

B Northern Air recently implemented a series of cost cutting measures including the elimination of in-flight meal service

For a "resolve the paradox" question, we need to 1st identify the paradox in the argument and then choose an answer that explains how BOTH sides of the paradox can be true.

IMHO, none of the options talk about both sides of the paradox, options B and D talk about decreasing cost and increasing revenue respectively. However, profit is a totally different ball game. Additionally, these options don't mention why Mammoth is not doing well.

I have boldfaced certain words/ phrases that clearly explain why this Q is sub-standard. Option E, if designated as the OA, is a joke at best. We should post such OAs only on the 1st of April :-) i read cucustomers as CUCUMBERS, 1st.. LOL

Apart from glaring spelling mistakes, the whole stem is a brilliant contender for multiple Sentence Correction Qs than critical reasoning; i will simply ignore it.

@Original poster - Please show mercy on us :-) Cite the source please - Catprep?? May we have more info than that - hope there is no error in copy-pasting!!!

It seems to me that the right answer is E
