Input needed: Should I postpone my test date?

I haven't registered yet, but I'm tentatively planning on taking the GMAT a few days before Thanksgiving. This means that my test is merely a month away.

I started studying casually in August, and then in September, I started studying more intensely. Through September and October, I focused on the verbal section, and at this point, I'm scoring "above average" on verbal questions according to OG. Given the fact that math isn't my strong suit, I feel that I'll currently score on the borderline of "average" and "below average" in this section according to OG.

Truth be told, I know that Quant is my weak point, so my strategy was to focus on fine-tuning my verbal skills (to offset a lower quant score and partly for "fear" of tackling this section. Now that I only have a month left before my desired test date, I need to kick quant review into high gear.

Now that a month seems like such a short amount of time, I'm wondering if I'll be ready by late November. Since the holidays are coming up, it'd be ideal to get the test out of the way by Thanksgiving. In between Thanksgiving and Christmas, I won't be able to study much at all due to a 2 week trip and then just being busy with family during the holidays. If I DO decide to postpone my test date, I'm worried that my inability to continue studying/practicing regularly for almost a full month will cause me to "forget" everything I studied up to this point.

What would you do if you were in my shoes?

Some other info:

- I'll be OK with scoring a minimum of 500 for the program I'm looking into ( but the higher, the better, of course).

- The absolute latest I can take the exam is in April in order to meet the application deadline of the school I'm looking at. [/b]

Hi janextine--

This is totally a personal decision obviously -- but what we've heard from others in your position is, if they delay things, they completely drop the ball. Nobody likes studying for the GMAT anyway, and maybe it's just human nature but when holidays and all those other non-GMAT distractions come around, we've seen people just forget everything about the test, and understandably so. But then picking it up again is, like you said, starting over from zero.

Maintaining the momentum and pushing all the way through has some value. We totally don't know you of course, so maybe you're the type who has the discipline to keep plugging away at it!! (EssaySnark is most definitely not that type of person :-) )

What we would recommend if you were our client asking about this, is we'd say push through and take the test as planned in November. Give it your all between now and then. If you really only need a 500, then it's highly likely you'll crack that barrier, and you'll be done!

But if not, then you have a baseline, and you also have a much better sense of where you need to focus your efforts. So then you can drop it for awhile and come back again in January or whenever, since you have plenty of time for the studying ramp-up again before your April deadline.

So. That's our 2c. Not worth much, but you asked for opinions, and we luv to give ours.

Good luck with it!!!!

Hi!
I wanted to know if I postpone my appointment by how many months will I be able to delay my test date. If I was supposed to take it in Feb, can I postpone it until July, the same year?

Hi anshita_sayal --

You can cancel or reschedule up to 7 days before the original test date. You will get a partial refund if you cancel. There is a fee to reschedule, and you must set the new date within 6 months of the original one.

You can check out all the rules and procedures for these in the GMAT bulletin available on mba.com.

Good luck with it!
