solve the equation

by uptowngirl92 » Mon Jun 08, 2009 5:17 am
IF 2-x(1/x +2)=19-x,then x=?
(A) -3 (B) 3 (C) 4 (D) 5 (E) 9
the answer sheet contained a printing error so i dont know the answer for sure.could it by any chance be (e)?
Okay so here is my querie:
Are we suppose to multiply (1/x+2) by only x or by 2-x?I assumed that because of an absence of bracket the term is to be multiplied by only x and hence the answer is (b).Please shed some light.

I'm assuming in the original equation you meant (1/(x+2))

If so the furthest I was able to simplify it was to

x^2 -16x - 34 = 0

Can't really factor it. Without knowing the typo its difficult to solve.

2-x(1/x +2)=19-x

hence:

2-1-2x=19-x
1-2x+x=19
-x=18
x=-18

typo in the problem i assume....

The answer to your question is PEMDAS.

First Paranthesis....Multiplication by X and then the subtraction from 2.

So, we are supposed to MULTIPLY ONLY by X.
For love, not money.
