Hi,

For this question, I did not understand the question statement itself!

A computer chip manufacturer expects the ratio of the no. of defective chips to the total no. of chips in all future shipments to equal the corresponding ratio for the shipments S1, S2, S3 and S4 combined, as shown in the table below. What is the expected no. of defective chips in a shipment of 60,000 chips?

Shipment No. of defective chips in shipment Total no. of chips in shipment
S1 2 5000
S2 5 12000
S3 6 18000
S4 4 16000

Answer choices:
14
20
22
24
25

Here is how I solved it:
Added up the no. of defective chips in the 4 shipments: 2+5+6+4=17
Added the total no. of chips in shipment: 5000+12000+18000+16000=51000
17/51000*60000=20

Is this the correct way of doing it?

You're right,

17/51000 = x/60000

x = 20

That's correct!

Total no. of shipments = 5000 + 12000 + 18000 + 16000 = 51000
Total no. of defective chips = 2 + 5 + 6 + 4 = 17
Let x be the expected number of defective chips in a shipment of 60000 chips.
Then 17:51000 = x:60000
x = 20
