Which should be used to refer a *noun*, here the noun is "technique".
Comparison is between the technique and "to put lipstick on a a Greek Statue"

A

Whats the OA.?

B- Passive
C - incorrect comparison - Here technique is compared to lipstick, it should be the entire process.
D - incorrect comparison
E - it? Pronoun-Antecedent ?

My stake on E, though not sure.

"they liken to putting" sounded absurd to me in A

others change the meaning of original sentence.

E uses "likening it to putting" - which is better than A

where "it" refers to nearest singular noun "technique".

I think it's E too.
It properly compares the process of colorization to the process of putting lipstick blah blah.

IMO is E there 2 /3split which and likening, which refers to work of art and likening correctly refers to the techinque, and E as right comparison

Between D and E..

E scores are it refers to techniques...and is modified by likening
