(A) with the rates of most other fishes
(B) to most other fishes’ rate
(C) to that of rates for most other fishes
(D) to most other fishes
(E) with most other fishes


can sum1 pls tell me the difference bw 'compared to' and 'compared with'?

to show comparison between unlike things, compare to is used.
eg.He compared T20 cricket match to a hindi movie.

to show comparison between like things, compare with is used.
eg.The police compared the duplicate document with the original.

hence B C n D r out.
E - metabolic rate is compared with fishes. hence incorrect.


hence IMO A.

Yes, IMO A is the correct answer for the same reasons that loki stated. ;)

IMO A

Loki is rite, 'comapred to' for unlike things and 'comapred with' for like things

use 'compare with' when pointing out the differences.
use 'compare to' when illustrating similarities.

The metabolic rate of sharks is low compared with the rates of most other fishes.

(A) with the rates of most other fishes - Correct
(B) to most other fishes' rate - rate compared to most rate of fishes - wrong
(C) to that of rates for most other fishes - to that (refers to rates) of rates - wrong
(D) to most other fishes - rate compared to fishes - wrong
(E) with most other fishes - rate compared to fishes - wrong

From MGMAT: The GMAT ignores the traditional distinction between COMPARED TO (Emphasizing similarities) and COMPARED WITH (emphasizing differences)

In Answer (B) Rate is compared to most rate (of fishes)

Instead, you should compare Rate to Rate (of most fishes)

I disagree here.

First, how is rate not compared to rate in B? The word "most" in most other fishes' rate is modifying "other fishes'". If most was intended to modify rate, then it must touch the noun.

Second, even if it were "most rate", how would it be wrong to compare rate with other rates? For example:

My rate of running speed is fast compared to most rates of running speed.

How would this sentence be wrong? Am I missing a rule here?
