"The invention of the internet has created more problems than it has solved. Most people would have a higher quality of life had the internet been never invented."

Essay:

Internet has been a revolutionary technology and it has changed our lives for the better. As with the any new technology, internet may have some drawbacks but I am going to argue that on the whole
it has improved our quality of life.

At first there are there are the environmental benefits of internet technology. Previously,
almost all communication between people and businesses was done using regular paper
mail. These days a lot of such communication has shifted to electronic mail, thereby
saving many trees, helping the environment and slowing global warming. Internet
has allowed a lot of employees to work remotely so they never really have to commute
to the office. This again helps with the environment because you have much less
vehicles burning fossil fuels on the road. Moreover, this saves the commute time
for the employees. We have all heard the horror stories of excruciating commutes to
and from work. By not having to commute, employees have freed up several hours in their schedule.
They can spend this time with their families and engage in leisure activities, so internet
has really improved their quality of life.

Internet has allowed for better collaboration and organization around the world. It has
made the world a more connected place. Surgeons sitting in part of the world can now
perform or supervise surgical operations remotely. This was unthinkable before age of internet.
This has allowed patients to be able to tap into skilled doctors anywhere in the globe and
physical distance between locations is not really an issue any more.

Internet also has social implications. We have all witnessed the "Arab spring" where people
in countries like Egypt and Tunisia have been able to organize and protest in order to throw out
repressive regimes. Internet technologies like facebook and twitter had a great role to play
in these revolutions. Previously, governments used to restrict organization of protests
by controlling tv and radio stations. However, they have no way of controlling the internet.
So entire nations have been liberated because of internet and we would not be
better off without it.

Internet does bring some problems with it. Scammers and criminals can hide easily
on the internet. Online scams have become relatively more frequent because there
is no face to face interaction. The person on the other end of the email can pretend to
be anyone. A major example of this is identity theft. With more and more people
shopping and working online, it has become easier to steal someone's personal information
and misuse it. However these problem can be mitigated by taking some easy steps
to protect one's information. For example shop only on reputable websites and protect
your computer with a "firewall" software. We did'nt stop driving cars because of accidents.
Similarly, internet has improved our lives in many different ways and some drawbacks
of internet can be mitigated with appropriate measures.
