by kumaramit » Mon May 28, 2012 9:18 pm
Would you please be kind enough to share your insights regarding the schools in which I should apply?

Here is my profile:
GMAT 710 (Quant 48, Verbal 40)
GPA 3.75 (Production Engineering and Management, 1998)

Full time Work Experience 14 years ( 2 months - TATA Motors, as Automobile engineer, 9 years - Infosys, from Software Engineer, Programmer Analyst, Project Manager, Account Manager, 5 years - AIG, senior program manager)
Part time Work Experience 9 months with TATA Steel in India as Trainee.
Achieved average to superior performance ratings throughout. Got top band a few years.

Was in 7 clubs in engineering college including leadership roles.
Reached national level debate competitions several times during college days.
Was selected best student in 3 large Indian states in 10th.
Was awarded merit certificate for being one among top 0.1% students in mathematics in 10th standard.

Want to eventually go in public service and strategic consulting for governments.

Hi kumaramit,

Most of the management consulting firms in India take government contracts. The only thing is you do not have consulting experience so they will hire you as associate only. If you are okay with it, you can go for an MBA program. Schools like ISB, IIMA (PGPX program), IIMB (EPGP), etc suit you and will have consulting firms hire on campus.

Hi Amit,

With 14 years of experience you can target ISB and IIM exec programs. But honestly the consulting story or even the public services story won't sell.

Top consulting companies are pre MBA profile agnostic and infact they want people with lesser experience ( preferably 3-5 yrs) and rarely hire anyone with 14 yrs of experience.

For public services MBA will not help you as there are no public services jobs which are posted on a B school placement board and MBA for learning and then public service story doesn't sound very coherent.

What will go well is a general management role which will fit well with your profile and past experience.

Remember... many applicants are rejected not because they have a bad profile but because adcom feels that there is lack of clarity in terms of goals.

Hope that helps.
