"Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do, and they will surprise you with their ingenuity."
To what extent do you agree or disagree with the opinion expressed above?
Explain your point of view by giving reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.
My Response:
The aforementioned topic states that people should be given freedom in completing a task, is interesting and debatable. On one hand, proponents may argue that when people are provided with freedom in completing the task, they will come up with interesting and innovative way to complete the task. On the other hand, opponents may argue that if people are given absolute freedom there is every chance that the final outcome may be different from the actual outcome required. However, in final analysis of the issue, I strongly agree that people should be provided with chance to complete the assigned task on their own.
The primary reason for my stance is that when people are given freedom to choose the way in which they intend to complete the work, they try to bring in creativity to the solution. This helps the not only the individual to whom the work is assigned but also to the superior who assigned him the work. By providing freedom to work, the individual will not only be interested in work but also be responsible which in turn helps the superior. For example, I always assign work to my subordinates and provide absolute freedom to complete the assigned task. And mostly I get suprised by the way my subordinates complete the task assigned to them.
In addition, if the people are contolled to complete the task in a particular way by superiors, people eventually loose interest and thus may completly loose creativity. This reason is also supported by a recent survey conducted among the employees of the Indian software industry.
However, if the person assigned work is pretty new to the job or if he requires some help, he should be mentored by the superiors. Superiors should encurage the people to think in innovative ways to complete the task. As mentioned in the above paragraphs, it helps both the supeevisors and subordinates.
To conclude, People should be given freedom to choose the way to complete the tasks assigned to them but should be mentored by the senior people if they require any help.
