"Reveal that" makes sense here, let us step back and assume that this does not click.
A possible prephrase could be "crimes ranging from X .... to Y.....

We see that B, C and D remain on this basis.
Examining each choice:
B - convictions were not crimes as stated in the choice -"Convictions in all cases were crimes "
C - Ranging ....ranging is an awkward construction.
D - looks good
Hence pick D.
Also note A can be eliminated on the basis of reference to "they" which is ambiguous in reference.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the explanation.

in choice D ......property ranging from highway robbery to forgery..
Property is not ranging from highway robbery to forgery , crimes are ranging from X to Y.

Am i missing something here?

@sandy217,
I think you have a valid doubt. What is the source of this question?

Arpita,

I was wondering if the reference of they to inanimate objects is always incorrect.

Consider the following -
Nuclear power stations are a menace to humanity. They are capable of causing widespread devastation if things go awry.

Is the use of they incorrect here?

Source : Practice exercises from kaplan Gmat comprehensive program.

I think "They" in A refers to Records(again inanimate) but not crimes and hence it is wrong.

Records of the first 736 British convicts deported to Australia reveal convictions for crimes against property in all cases and they ranged from highway to forgery

Correct answer should convey , crimes are ranging from X to Y. But i think none of the answer choices are doing that.

For sure the use of they is incorrect in A, but my reason is different.

In my opinion, they is incorrect in A because the antecedent is ambiguous and not because it is inanimate
They can refer to -
1) records
2) convictions
3) crimes

My question to Arpita was to clarify that if they refers to inanimate objects, is it a valid reason for ruling the option out?

Agreed, ambiguousness trumps over animate / inanimate weeding.

OA is D.

But my question is , in D "ranging" should modify crimes not the property. Y is it assumed that crimes are ranging from X to Y?
Is it because "crimes against property" is a prepositional phrase?
I dnt think ,this simple/easy/not great words will not add to anyone's knowledge. Kindly try to answer the question along with explanations and make others understand the easiness with which u could answer .It will be helpful to the person who thought question is problematic and posted this.
