In fact I selected E. I was wondering why most of the guys selected B

I did not consider B, because there is a huge gap between the subject and the verb "vanished".(OG says that the subject and the verb should be as close as possible.)

D & E are the contenders.

In option D "them" is ambiguous. "them" can refer to either "species" or "creatures" ,so D is out.

E is better .(I don't like it though)

Got a PM asking me to chime in...

Let me try to make B more acceptable. My words in red...

"Nearly 99 percent of THE five hundred million different species of living creatures that HAVE appeared on Earth have vanished.

Not perfect, but acceptable.

E is good as it is written. This is perfectly appropriate.

Hi David,

I have a doubt on two things i.e

1. In option E don't you feel that comma + Fanboys rule is not being followed because the portion after comma "nearly 99 percent have vanished." is not an Independent clause???????

2. Can you please elaborate on the option B which you modified and feel would have been correct.........

Please clarify on the above two parts.

of your 2 questions, maybe i can give some explanation on question 1
option E does not need the FANBOYS, because the first part, "of the nearly XXX", is not a clause, but just a fragment. Thus the rest of the sentence is of complete structure.
