238. Dental caries and gingivitis can be exacerbated not only by the foods patients eat but also by when the patients eat them.
(A) not only by the foods patients eat but also by when the patients eat them
(B) by not only the foods patients eat but also by when the patients eat them
(C) not only by the foods patients eat but also by time when the foods are eaten
(D) by not only the foods that are eaten by patients but also by the times the foods are eaten
(E) not only by what patients eat but also by when they eat it

NOT ONLY x BUT ALSO y

X & Y have to be grammatically parallel

Option A -> (the foods patients eat) & (when they eat them) are not parallel

Option B -> Sentence not parallel - Notice the 'by' before 'not only'.

Option C -> Seems OK

Option D -> Same as B

Option E -> The main problem with E seems to be the noun referrant for pronoun 'IT' (used at the end).

C wins (though i feel we should have a 'the' before 'time' - (but also by time when the foods are eaten)

Any thoughts??

(B) by not only the foods patients eat but also by when the patients eat them: by is awkwardly used
(C) not only by the foods patients eat but also by time when the foods are eaten: shd be d correct ans
(D) by not only the foods that are eaten by patients but also by the times the foods are eaten: redundant, awkward
(E) not only by what patients eat but also by when they eat it: what is improper here

I digged up some past entries for this thread and it seems that the OA is E!!! - This question is taken from 1000SCQ238

However i beg to differ with the answer - 'It' has to have a noun referrant (exceptions are there but they do not apply here) in option E.

Any thoughts?

.....gingivitis can be exacerbated by..time ...? how can time act like an actor ?

in E, it can only refer back to what is being eaten. Hence, IMO E.

My pick is C. It's a parallel construction and also omits all the ambiguity made by them/it in other options. So C is the best.

Point taken. Option C cannot be the answer. But i am not convinced as to how 'it' refer back to 'what' is being eaten!

I know that question for a question is not an answer....but still.... :)

somehow i feel none of the answer choices are correct!!!! We gotta be wary of 1000SC qns...

By the way, 'IT' can refer to a clause / infinitive - which seems to be the only exception for 'IT' noun reference.

To eat is good. -> (Better way of putting it is) -> IT is good to eat. Here 'IT' does not have any referrant..

yes, in that way it is being used as a placeholder subject and generally, will be the opening of the sentence.
In our case however, it is preceded by lot of nouns (possible subjects) and if the sentence is correct, which is the case, it must & will refer to one of them.

How can A be eliminated. I dun see any gud reason for that. Them clearly refers to foods as patients is already mentioned in the corresponding clause.
