Pls, explain the use of AS and LIKE in general and apply your understand to the question 122 and 104, OG 11. I see there is a contradiction between these two.

Pls, DO NOT discuss other matters in these 2 question, pls, discuss the matter of LIKE and AS.

c,merging the nuclei of atoms rather than splitting them apart, as nuclear reactors do
d, and merges the nuclei of atoms but does not split them apart, as is done in nuclear reactors
e,and merges the nuclei of atoms, unlike atomic reactors that split them apart.

In both the examples "as" is used to compare the clauses.

In first, we are comparing fusion in which merging happens and fission in which splitting happens.

Nuclear fusion is the force that powers the Sun, the stars, and hydrogen bombs, merging the nuclei of atoms rather than splitting them apart, as nuclear reactors do

Clause 1 - Nuclear fusion is ...........merging the nuclei of atoms
Clause 2 - splitting them (nuclei) apart, as nuclear reactors do(verb)

If we remove "do" then there is incorrect comparison.

So we should use like to compare similar things such as fusion and fission
mainly nouns.

As is used for comparing clauses as above.
As is also used when it stnads for something

for example: the boy acts as a cop.

Same explanatio for second example

duongthang,
Rule is simple.

As - compare clause (with noun and action appears) (He is dancing as YOU DO)
Like - Noun, pronoun but not the action. (I can dance like YOU)

Now coming to Q122.

Answer B is correct because it is comparing with pearls, now whats about "moving mysteriously from one necklace to another", here it is not used to show action instead used as an adjective, which is modifying pearl.

Actully it is similar to this statement,

I have working pen. Here working is Adj but not the action.

IMO, had it been "like pearls move mysteriously........", it would be wrong, because u r comparing actions
like pearls "moving mysteriously from one necklace to another"

here the part in quotes above just modifies "pearls". so it means, genes... like pearls (some information about pearls)
