A recent article in The New York Times....

A recent article in The New York Times reported that many recent college graduates had decided on moving back into their parents' home rather than face the uncertainty and expense of the rental market.

A) had decided on moving back into their parents' home rather than face
B) had decided on moving back into their parents' homes instead of facing
C) have decided to move back into their parents' homes instead of facing
D) had decided to move back into their parents' homes rather than facing
E)have decided to move back into their parents' homes rather than face

There are 2 errors:
1.) Idiom: Correct usage is decide to rather than decide on
2) Verb Tense: Should we use 'have decided' or 'had decided' ?

Accordingly, the correct answer will be either B or E.

Correct Answer will be "E".
KEY: Decided to move .....rather than (to) Face.

IMO E...

The students decision has not changed ... hence 'have decided'. Also it is should 'rather than' (preference of the students)

college graduates-plural, use of have is correct
parallelism--to move ..to face

my answer is E.

The answer should be E. The tense is incorrect in A, B, D (had decided is incorrect), and "instead of" shouldn't be used here.
Have you wondered how you could have found such a treasure? -T
