Yes, community service is beneficial especially if you are in leadership experiences. GMAT is also used as well so your GMAT plus your cgpa (along with your undergraduate institution) determine your academic competitiveness. Your role and career progression matter more than whether the company is IT or not.

Hi Rahul,

You can always compensate for low GPA with a better GMAT score.
Yes, work ex of a non IT company will any day be better to a similar experience in an IT company as ISB has maximum number of applicants from IT background and hence you will be able to differentiate yourself.

From ISB admissions perspective, community service will not matter a lot unless your work in really concrete and different. Ever second applicants writes something about community service in application so instead of that may be you can focus on building extra curriculars such as freelance projects/ assignments, languages, part time ventures etc.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

I'm Ajwad. Ive been through a rigorous 4 Year Engineering Programme from NIT Trichy (India) .

After passing out in 2008, I've been working with various positions on the Oil and Gas Industry, on the Manufacturing side - Most recently with Emerson Process Management (XNYS:EMR), with their Global Project pursuit team, for the last 2 years. This is a Pre-Sales / Strategic Sales & Marketing outfit for Emerson, and my work entails direct involvement with Large Oil and Gas Producers such as Shell, Exxon Mobil, China Petroleum, LukOil (Russia), Sonangol (Angola) etc. My Current job also requires me to travel extensively to Client locations.

In a nutshell, I have had a good experience in interacting and conducting business with diverse groups of people, in multiple locations and countries. Also have had good exposure on a more Macro level of Sales positioning etc., where I'm required to have a Top down understanding of Economy, O&G Industry, Significant Investment, with Intent and Outlooks.

I'm Currently in Dubai, where I have been for the last 3.5 years. Not very involved with a lot of Social work OR Community Service.

CPGA During College: 6.28
GMAT : 720
Overall Workex: 4 Years

Please let me know what my profile looks like as an applicant, and areas of improvement

Hi Ajwad,

For ISB your profile is more than good.
GPA is low but GMAT score is decent.

More than that you come from a diverse sector and your career progression, projects which you have handled, client interaction and international experience all look good.

At the same time make sure that you talk about few activities outside your work. Carefully craft your goals. Talk to few alums. This is because a lot of work which you have mentioned is done my MBA grads.

Your candidature is good so start working on the essays.

Ajwad,

One idea for beefing up your community service is to see if Emerson has any corporate social responsibility initiatives, so you can simultaneously gain community service and position yourself well within your company.
