50. According to some analysts, the gains in the stock
market reflect growing confidence that the economy
will avoid the recession that manyhad feared earlier
in the year and instead come
in for a "soft landing,"
followed by a gradual increase in business activity.

(A) that the economy will avoid the recession
that many had feared earlier in the year and
instead come
(B) in the economy to avoid the recession, what
many feared earlier in the year, rather to come
(C) in the economy's ability to avoid the recession,
something earlier in the year many had feared,
and instead to come
(D) in the economy to avoid the recession many
were fearing earlier in the year, and rather
to come
(E) that the economywill avoid the recession that
was feared earlier this year by many, with it
instead coming

I also don't know what's the problem about "rather to come", all I thought is B is very fluent, I don't know how to eliminate such a choice.

A - Correct.
B - What is not the proper over here. You need that to introduce subordinate clause.
C - Something earlier in the year many had feared - is awkward. Something is modifying earlier while it should modify many.
D - fearing is not a proper tense in this sentence.
E - with it is awkward over here.

Oh, I got it~ I need a subordinate clause, I should firstly know what do I need, then eliminate choices.

Thanks a lot!
By the way, what could I expect to gain by reading daily newspapers (for improving reading skills )?

reading daily newspaper will help you getting familiarize with English idioms and their proper usage. Not only this it will help you in getting acquainted with various topics which appears frequently in RC and CR. Having familiarity with topic give you a comfort and thus take off the pressure. My advise is try to be cursory on newspaper but read editorials more often. Also it would be great if you read magazines related to business or some abstract topics.

hope this helps
