In the 1980's the rate of increase of the minority population of the United States was nearly twice as fast as the 1970's.

(A) twice as fast as
(B) twice as fast as it was in
(C) twice what it was in
(D) two times faster than that of

I used this inference.
Rate of reaction of chemical A is twice that of Chemical B

So rate should be modified using twice.
DE out.

twice the rate of increase and fast are redundant,

pick C.

I have a doubt in C..

"What it was in 1970's" is it correct??? 'It' referring to possessive 1970's


I guess it should have been "what it was in 1970" ....

Please explain me...thanks..

If i replace 'it' with "rate of increase"

What 'rate of increase' was in 1970's

what 'rate of increase' was in 1970

what 'rate of increase' was of 1970's

Which are all do you think are correct..???

A-> twice as fast as .. incorrectly compares the rate of increase with the population.
B-> twice as fast as it was in .. it refers to the rate of increase of population and correctly compares the rate of increase in population of two era's.
C-> this idiomatically doesn't sound appropriate to me.
D & E-> Two times .. is something which I feel doesnot go with rate of increase in population.



I would pick B. OA and explanation, incase the answer is wrong, please.

We are comparing rates
first pass:
(A) twice as fast as <this shows that the rate twice as fast as 1970's (the year)>
(B) twice as fast as it was in <hold it in first pass>
(C) twice what it was in <hold it in first pass>
(D) two times faster than that of <two times with rate of increase is wrong>
(E) two times greater than <two times with rate of increase is wrong>

second pass
(B) twice as fast as it was in <fast keyword here changes the meaning by conveying that rate of increasing grew twice faster>
(C) twice what it was in <correct>
