Profile Evaluation

by oyeankur » Sun Dec 11, 2011 10:42 pm
Hello Team,

Need your help in evaluating my profile for ISB.

10th : 66%
12th :60%
B.E (Computer Sc) :70%
MBA (Systems) : 7.8 CGPA

IT Experience : Business Analyst with total 7 yrs ( 5 yrs in US)
Good progress in career and have good repo with Manager and Clients.

Extra Circulars :

Not very good but I have good collection of stamps ( Philately) and done few good projects in Engg on basic robotics.

Planning for ISB 2013 (R1).

Gmat - will be taking next year but not expecting much since my aptitude is not good.. max would be 700.

Any advice ?

Hey oyeankur -- well as you know, your profile is somewhat standard to what ISB sees a lot, though you have more work experience than is typical. The five years in the US are good since ISB appreciates an international profile. Getting at least a 700 will help you on the GMAT. The stamp collecting is one of those tiny things that can be differentiated on the margins, but it doesn't add much and certainly won't be enough to tip the scales on what seems to be a rather common profile. The robotics thing is potentially interesting but more important will be what contributions you've made on those projects and how you are a leader (and, of course, what you want to do with your future career post-ISB).

You'll want to spend the months from now till your application in the Fall in shoring up your leadership profile and even possibly diving into some community projects. Obviously the adcom will be suspicious if you've literally done nothing with community service up to the time you put your apps together, but still, it can be helpful to have SOMETHING to report, since all the schools ask about it.

Your biggest challenges are:

1. Because you're older, the adcom will likely be expecting you to have done MORE in your career, in commensurate with how long you've been working. They may want to be even more impressed with stories of leadership and accomplishment than they would want to be with a younger candidate.

2. Because you already have an MBA, you need to explain/demonstrate why you need another one. What are your career goals now, why did you pursue the education that you already did and why was it insufficient or why do you need to go for the ISB PGP now? You probably don't need to spend too much time on this but it is likely a question that the adcom will automatically have in reviewing your profile.

Hope this helps - good job for getting started early - let us know if you have any other questions!

Thanks for your feedback. Regarding leadership roles ,I have instances where I lead the complete project from scratch to end. I like to be in same IT Industry after my second MBA but in product management.

You are right- I need to explain why second MBA - basic reason is I did MBA just after my Engg and had no relevant industry experience so couldn't able to take much benefit out of my first MBA. will that justify ?

Do you think - my acads percentage are low and will impact as disadvantage ?
Just wanted to share my graduation and PG years - B.E ( 2000-04) , MBA ( 2004-06).

I have no hobby which I am so passionate !!

Can you please advice what I can do in my industry to show some diversity ?

This is not automatically evidence of "leadership" but instead of "management." Leadership means many things and *maybe* that example is evidence of leadership too, but on the face of it, it is not. It's how you present the details of what you literally did that will help the adcom see that you are a leader. Here's a starting point for further reflection on this very important topic: https://essaysnark.blocked/2011/06/ ... nyway.html

Mmmm.... dunno. Probably not. It's what anyone in that position would say (and has said). Also instead of talking about why your first MBA wasn't sufficient you'll need to speak in more positive/forward-leaning terms about why you need another one. It's a perhaps subtle, but important, distinction.

Somewhat, but not out of the question. Your GMAT will matter a lot too (obviously). If you have any professional certifications that can sometimes boost the academic record too, depending on what it's in.

Sorry... no. This is your task as an MBA applicant and future leader!!! :D

Hi Ankur,

Spend the year building your leadership skills and community involvement. Instead of starting out on totally new things, build on interests from your past so there is a thread.

I graduated in 2008 and am from the Indian IT pool. I help many people to ISB. To be very frank if you do not touch 680-700, it will be difficult.

Dig into your pool of experience and make a proper resume showcasing impact. Also, be able to point out why you are unique and what you bring to ISB.

Regards,
Chimni
